Update on Yesterday's Capsule Pricing Error

Hi folks,

Yesterday an error in League's in-game store briefly made some expensive content available for Blue Essence. We want to explain a little more about what happened and how we'll prevent similar errors in the future.

What happened?

At 10AM PT on January 10th, the new Blood Moon capsules and Prestige Points went on sale. Because of a configuration error that resulted in PBE content making it to Live, you could purchase individual Prestige Points as well as individual Blood Moon capsules for just 1 BE apiece.

The error was live on the store for 14 minutes. During that time, a few thousand players across all regions were able to take advantage of the situation and buy both Blood Moon capsules and Prestige Points using BE. In many regions, fewer than 100 players were able to advantage of the error.

Yesterday I announced on Twitter that we'll be reverting and refunding all BE-purchased Prestige Points along with the Aatrox Prestige skin.

**But what about the capsules? **

For reasons I'll explain here, we won't be able to revert or remove the free Blood Moon capsules that players were able to purchase using BE. Lots of you have pointed out that this feels unfair, so we want to explain why we decided to do this.

It's not too complicated of a process for us to manually remove most items from your inventory if we need to. If it's a single skin or a champion, we have tools to remove those quickly and effectively.

However, it gets more complicated when we talk about capsules and other loot items, because it's a lot harder to track what players have done with the capsules after they open them. You can disenchant skin shards into orange essence, or reroll them using other skin shards you already owned (including ones you earned legitimately). Instead of reverting a single item, we'd have to revert potentially thousands of transactions made in the loot system. This would take us months to undo, as it’s a very manual and delicate process to ensure we don’t wipe out legitimate transactions accidentally. Additionally, it could revert perfectly normal actions, like LP gains, Mastery tokens, and more.

Since we don't keep easily reversible backups of an earlier version of your account's state, properly reverting the capsules purchased using BE yesterday would be nearly impossible and come at the expense of other features we’re working on for players. For this reason, we're choosing to only take away the Prestige Points and Blood Moon Aatrox Prestige Editions that were obtained with BE.

We're already taking steps to prevent this sort of mistake from ever happening again.

Our first action will be to make internal test prices reflect Live prices for store content. This way, if content that shouldn’t be on Live accidentally makes it way out, it won’t be exploitable or priced incorrectly.

In the long term, we're going to continue to explore the work needed to address issues like this in the future. In the off chance this happens again, we'll be able to respond quickly and appropriately.

Thank you so much for your patience.

The worst part of this explanation is : Why are we supposed to give a shit if people who abused the bug lose out on a couple legitimate chest? Don't tell me anyone thought this was legit, everyone that bought it knew it was abusing a bug. Other games literally ban you for that, I think losing out on a couple legit skin shards is pretty light.

Also, I can't seriously believe Riot Games have no usable account back-up. Anyone that works in this field should be terrified reading this, because while right now it may not be such a huge deal, a day could come where not having back-ups lead to account/serious losses for customers (don't say it can't happen, you can never say that when talking about data and security).

Even if they can't remove skin shards and OE (which already is a joke seeing they're a multi-billion dollars company), what's stopping them from removing Gemstones and Gemstones-related content? Don't tell me this is too much work. Gemstone skins are among the rarest in the game, probably even higher than Prestige ones, and they had no issues refunding Aatrox.

Finally, why are they not automatically giving out a few capsules to customers that didn't abuse the bug, if they can't reroll it? Please don't tell me their system can't even handle that either, random mobile games do it all the time (I talk from experience here). It's not huge and yes it means they might lose out on a bit of money, but telling your paying and loyal customers to kindly go fuck off is even worse. They need to own up to their mistakes.

There's literally no excuse to go "We can't do it perfectly, so we won't do it". It's better to do what you can than do nothing, this should not even be something to discuss honestly, I've played online games for more than a decade, and even gacha games from unknown developpers deal better and quicker with similar issues.

Not sure on the account backups. Last year (or the year before) Riot had a tournament on EUW where you could win like 5.6k BE but gave out RP instead - we bought skins with the RP but all skins and the RP they wrongfully handed out was removed simoultaneously.

If someone did it by hand it definitely was a lot of effort.

Pretty sure they used to give out season rewards by hand back in season 4 or 5, so I wouldn’t put it past them.

I don't like how their only response for this is "we'll do better next time." I wish they would have detailed reports like Amazon where they go into detail what exactly happened and the exact steps they're taking to prevent this from happening again.

Honestly, the first step they should start working on right now is having proper back-up data for players' accounts, because they just announced publicly that they don't. (Or they're lying and not willing to, which I doubt and hope not).

Just to point out: They didn't say they had no backups. They said they weren't easily reversible.

I mean, if you have backups but you can't use them when you need to, do you really have backups?

level 7

One potential situation I see is that Riot has the backups but they don’t think that it’s worth going to the trouble of using them.

As a person who has had to write something like this a couple times

They usually just boil down to a few people making a small mistake that got over looked by multiple groups and checks/balances. It really sucks because the only real answer would be,”add more checks and balances”

You can add a billion checks and balances, eventually something will go wrong somewhere along the line. Even if it’s automated, someone could update something that changes what triggers the automation. Sucks, but errors happen. Writing,”what would help prevent this from happening” reports sucks dick if it’s something as simple as “don’t do it again”

I don’t think you read this properly at all. They basically just said the man hours to reverse everything would be make this completely not worth it. They would have to dedicate real resources to go through every transaction and try and re-engineer it.
